Almost all machines need lubricating oil or grease. In the selection of lubricating oil, choosing lubricating oil with appropriate viscosity is the premise of effective lubrication and the first step of lubricating oil selection. When selecting lubricating oil, we must first choose the appropriate lubricating oil viscosity.
The viscosity of lubricating oil is the value measured by laboratory bench at a certain temperature. After measuring the viscosity of various lubricating oils, these viscosities are graded, and then users select lubricating oil with appropriate viscosity grade according to the requirements of the equipment manual.
However, one thing worth noting is that the viscosity of lubricating oil will be affected by temperature: when the temperature rises, the viscosity of lubricating oil decreases (becomes thinner); when the temperature drops, the viscosity of lubricating oil increases (becomes thicker) and even cannot flow normally - the viscosity of lubricating oil is not the higher the better, but we hope that the viscosity of lubricating oil is as stable as possible, so the viscosity index (VI for short) is introduced to characterize this stability.
The viscosity index is referred to as the viscosity index. The higher the viscosity index of lubricating oil, the more stable the viscosity of lubricating oil is under temperature changes (the better the viscosity-temperature performance). Considering that the temperature is not constant in actual use, such as the temperature is low before the machine starts in winter, the lubricant will also experience different temperature zones during use. Therefore, do not ignore the viscosity index when selecting oil.
