Why the Grease has Different Color?
The reasons for different grease colors mainly include the following:
The color of base oil: Different crude oil origins, different refining technologies, etc. will cause differences in base oil color. Base oil that has been deeply refined by hydrogenation treatment contains fewer impurities and is relatively lighter in color.
The color of additives: In order to achieve different lubrication and protection effects, different lubricants need to add different additives, such as viscosity index improvers, antioxidants, detergent dispersants, antifoaming agents, rust inhibitors, antiwear agents, anti-emulsifiers, etc. These additives have different colors, which will cause the color of the lubricant to change.
The color of special dyes: Sometimes specific dyes are added to some lubricating oils and greases to change their original color. The purpose may be to distinguish different product categories, serve as a warning, facilitate the detection of grease leakage or cover defects in the production process. However, dyes will not play a role in lubrication protection.
Solid additives: Some greases are added with solid additives, such as molybdenum disulfide, graphite, metal powder, carbon black, etc., which will cause the grease to appear black or gray.
It should be noted that the color of grease has no direct relationship with its performance, and the quality or application of grease cannot be judged based solely on color. When selecting grease, factors such as equipment requirements, working conditions, and grease performance parameters should be considered comprehensively.
