The primary factor in selecting lubricating oil is the appropriate viscosity, so the lubricating oil should maintain a certain viscosity. However, the continuous mechanical shearing and rolling of the lubricating oil during use will cause the viscosity to decrease.
The shear stability of lubricating oil represents the property of the lubricating oil to maintain a stable viscosity when subjected to mechanical shearing and rolling, also known as mechanical stability. If the shear stability is good, the lubricating oil can maintain a relatively stable viscosity during mechanical shearing, otherwise the viscosity of the lubricating oil will decrease (the oil becomes thinner) due to shearing. In many cases, the viscosity of the lubricating oil suddenly decreases during use, often because of poor shear stability.
Therefore, when selecting lubricating oil, not only the viscosity should be appropriate and the viscosity index should be high, but also the lubricating oil should have good shear stability.
