What factors affect the performance of grease?
The following factors affect the performance of grease:
1. Properties of base oil
Viscosity: When the base oil viscosity is high, the load-bearing capacity of the grease is usually stronger, but the fluidity may be reduced. Grease with low viscosity base oil has better fluidity at low temperatures, but may not be able to withstand high loads.
Thermal stability: Base oil with good thermal stability can keep the grease stable in high temperature environment, and is not easy to oxidize, deteriorate and volatilize.
2. Type and content of thickener
Type: Different types of thickeners give grease different properties. For example, grease with lithium-based thickener has good water resistance and mechanical stability; grease with calcium-based thickener performs better under medium and low loads, but has relatively weak water resistance.
Content: With high thickener content, the grease has a large consistency, and the adhesion and sealing properties may be better, but the fluidity will be reduced. Conversely, with low thickener content, the grease is softer and has good fluidity but may be easy to lose in some cases.
3. The role of additives
Extreme pressure additives: Under high load conditions, extreme pressure additives can form a protective film on the metal surface to prevent direct contact and wear between metals.
Antioxidants: They can delay the oxidation process of grease and extend its service life.
Rust inhibitors: They prevent rust on the metal surface, especially in humid environments.
4. Working conditions
Temperature: High temperature can soften, drain, or even oxidize and deteriorate the grease; low temperature may increase the viscosity of the grease and deteriorate its fluidity.
Load: High load requires the grease to have a higher load-bearing capacity and extreme pressure performance.
Speed: High-speed parts require the grease to have good lubricity and shear resistance to prevent the grease from failing due to heat generated by friction.
Environmental factors: Such as humidity, dust, corrosive gases, etc., which will affect the performance of the grease. A humid environment may test the water resistance of the grease; dust and corrosive gases may accelerate the deterioration of the grease.
