How to choose the right lubricant based on viscosity
1. According to the engine situation
The viscosity of the lubricant should be selected according to the engine's own situation. If the gap between the internal parts of the engine is small, a lubricant with a lower viscosity (thinner) is needed. On the contrary, if the gap is large, a lubricant with a higher viscosity (thicker) is needed. Generally speaking, when the engine is new, the internal parts are less worn and the gap is naturally small, so a lubricant with a lower viscosity is needed, while an old car needs a lubricant with a higher viscosity.
2. According to the ambient temperature
Ambient temperature is also a factor that cannot be ignored in choosing lubricants. In summer, the temperature is high and the engine temperature will also be higher. At this time, a lubricant with a higher viscosity is needed to ensure that the lubricant is not too thin. On the contrary, in winter, a lubricant with a lower viscosity is needed to ensure the fluidity of the lubricant. If a lubricant with a higher viscosity is used at low temperatures in winter, additional losses will be added to the starter motor, battery, etc., and the internal resistance may increase fuel consumption; in summer, if a lubricant with insufficient high temperature performance is used, it will be difficult to form a sufficient protective film during the operation of the engine, which will cause insufficient lubrication and wear of the parts.
3. According to the characteristics of the machinery
Large running resistance and high speed light machinery, they have the characteristics of high speed and low torque. If high viscosity lubricating oil is dripped into it, the engine will not be able to rotate directly, so low viscosity lubricating oil (usually high fluidity liquid) must be used; low speed heavy machinery must use high viscosity (usually solid that is difficult to flow or does not flow at all). For example, the reducer used in engineering can only rotate one circle in several seconds, but the power provided can easily lift several tons of weight directly. At this time, high viscosity lubricating oil must be used to ensure normal oil film thickness and lubrication. If low viscosity is used, the oil film is too thin, and the difference may not be very big compared with no lubricating oil.
