Can different greases be mixed?
Generally, it is not recommended to mix different types of grease.
Grease is mainly composed of base oil, thickener and additives. These ingredients vary greatly in different types of grease. Take the common lithium-based grease and calcium-based grease as examples. The thickener of lithium-based grease is lithium soap, while that of calcium-based grease is calcium soap. When two different types of grease are mixed, their base oils may be incompatible. Base oil is the main component of grease and provides lubrication. If the base oil does not blend well, it will affect the lubrication effect.
At the same time, thickeners may also have problems after mixing. They may react chemically, causing the thickener to condense or decompose. Just like mixing two colloids with different chemical properties may destroy the original stable structure. Once this happens to the thickener, the consistency of the grease will change, and it may become too thin or too viscous from the original suitable state, and it cannot adhere normally to the surface of the part that needs lubrication.
Moreover, the types and proportions of additives in different types of greases are also different. These additives are intended to achieve functions such as anti-oxidation, anti-rust, and anti-wear. After mixing, the additives may interfere with each other and fail to play their due role, thereby reducing the overall performance of the grease, failing to effectively provide lubrication, rust prevention, sealing and other functions, and may even cause damage to the equipment.
