Car owners often have questions, such as what effect different performance oils have on engine operation, what kind of oil can stand the test of time, etc.
In fact, to answer these questions, you only need to look at the four properties of oil – 1) anti-wear 2) cleanliness 3) low temperature fluidity and 4) high temperature stability. For ordinary car owners, these technical terms may be difficult to understand. Mobil Dr. Run℠ will explain what these four properties represent today.
Grease is a colloidal structure substance, especially soap-based grease. Under the action of gravity for a long time, oil separation will inevitably occur. The larger the grease packaging container, the more serious this pressure oil separation tendency. Therefore, try to avoid using oversized packaging. In addition, the packaging should be well sealed to avoid the mixing of dust and moisture. Well-sealed packaging containers can also prevent the entry of oxygen, making the grease less likely to oxidize and deteriorate during storage.
1. Hardness
Hardness, or needle penetration, is a measurable characteristic to consider when selecting appropriate grease. The hardness of grease is determined by the number, 0 is soft, then increases with 1, 2 to 6. The hardness of 6 is the same as that of a soap bar. The mud in the garden is softer when it is easy to shovel into, and harder when it is difficult to shovel into. The hardness of grease is the same. It is graded according to the penetration depth of the grease dropped from a certain height by a cone gauge. Printing machinery is added with grease of appropriate hardness according to the requirements of the printing machine manufacturer, otherwise it may cause insufficient lubrication or increased resistance to the machine parts.
2. Pressure delivery
Another characteristic of grease is the difficulty of pressurized delivery; in the central grease supply system, two greases that are equally easy to pressurize at room temperature often have very different pressure delivery properties under lower temperature environments.
The difference comes from the different types and proportions of lubricating oils and soaps contained in the grease. Some printing machinery and binding equipment use a central grease supply system to lubricate the various components of the machinery, so it is important to choose a grease with excellent pressure delivery properties.
3. Dropping point
Because the grease contains different soap base relationships, different greases will melt at different temperatures. The dropping point is the temperature at which the grease changes from semi-solid to liquid; most calcium soap greases melt at 160-210°F, sodium soap greases at 350-350°F, and lithium soap greases at 350-400°F, so it is better to use sodium soap or lithium soap at high temperatures. Nowadays, most printing machines have high speeds. Since the bearing speed of the motor is high, the bearing temperature also increases accordingly. The use of grease with a higher dropping point can provide better protection for high-speed motor bearings such as "carbon pump" bearings.
4. Water resistance
Regardless of whether it comes into contact with water, some greases still need to perform their lubrication function, so their water resistance is an important property. Calcium soap and lithium soap-based greases are insoluble in water, while sodium soap greases are soluble in water, so they cannot be used as lubricants that may come into contact with water. The printing process requires mixing with water, so some bearings need to be protected by grease with good water resistance, otherwise, the service life of the bearing will be greatly reduced.
5. Stability
Some greases can still maintain their original hardness after being added to the bearing, that is, they are very stable; this kind of grease can soften after working in the anti-wear bearing for a period of time, and will flow out of the bearing if there is no good seal. During the printing process, the powder spraying is continuous and has a large coverage. If the grease used is poorly stable, it will cause pollutants to enter the bearings and components more easily, causing great damage to the printing machine.
Under the conditions of unopened and recommended storage temperature, general grease products can be stored for 2 to 3 years. If the expired products are to be continued to be used, their main quality indicators should be inspected at a professional testing institute, and they can only be used after they are qualified.
It is strictly forbidden to discharge waste grease directly into the ditch or into the soil to prevent pollution of water sources and the environment. Waste grease should be collected by recycling cans and then handed over to environmental protection companies approved by the government for recycling. Do not dump them randomly. People with skin allergies or scratches should avoid direct or indirect contact with lubricants. Do not wear clothing that is soaked with oil, and do not put oil-contaminated cloth scraps into bags. Do not use dirty cloth scraps to wipe off oil stains on the skin, in case there are metal fragments hidden in the cloth scraps that can scratch the skin and cause infection.
