    Compared with the materials of parts, the materials of any element of the friction pair bear more severe loads. There is relative movement between the friction pairs, which intensifies the effect of the load; the high temperature generated by the relative movement also promotes the change process from the physical and chemical aspects. The speed of this change caused by the relative movement and interaction of the surface is much faster than the change caused by other behaviors in the component. Therefore, in tribological analysis and tribological design, a full life cycle analysis is necessary.
     
    1. Corrosion risk stage
    Before any new friction pair is put into operation, there is a storage and transportation stage. During this stage, the friction pair will inevitably come into contact with the atmospheric medium and will inevitably be affected by the external environment.
    Good storage and transportation environment;
    Appropriate anti-corrosion measures, such as anti-rust oil, vacuum packaging, etc.;
    Try not to destroy these protective measures before they are put into use.
     
    2. Running-in wear stage
    Running-in is the initial stage of contact and interaction between friction pairs. In the initial operation of a new friction pair, the surface roughness value of the dual surface is large, the effective contact area is small, the number of contact points is small and the area of ​​most contact points is large, and the contact points are severely adhered, so the wear rate is large. However, as the running-in progresses, the surface micro-convexities are gradually worn away, the surface roughness value decreases, the effective contact area increases, the number of contact points increases, and the wear rate decreases, creating conditions for the stable wear stage.
    In order to avoid damage to the friction pair during the running-in wear stage, the running-in wear stage is mostly carried out under empty or low load;
    In order to shorten the running-in time, lubricating materials containing additives and solid lubricants can also be used to run-in under a certain load and higher speed;
    After the running-in is completed, it should be cleaned and replaced with a new lubricant.
     
    3. Stable wear stage
    In this stage, the wear is slow and stable, and the wear rate remains basically unchanged. It belongs to the normal working stage. This stage is the wear life of the friction pair, which is generally the longest stage. It is also the key stage of lubrication management and equipment maintenance.
    It is necessary to pay attention to the external environmental influence of the friction pair: such as water vapor ingress, external vibration source, etc.;
    Select appropriate working lubricant inside the friction pair;
    Technical ability of equipment operators.
     
    4. Severe wear stage
    After a long period of stable wear, due to the change of gap and surface morphology between the dual surfaces of the friction pair and fatigue of the surface layer, the wear rate increases sharply, resulting in reduced mechanical efficiency, loss of precision, abnormal vibration and noise, and rapid increase in the temperature of the friction pair, which eventually leads to complete failure of the friction pair.
     
    Before the friction pair increases sharply, some friction pairs can be repaired to avoid further deterioration, extend the service life of the friction pair, and postpone the severe wear period. Such as manual repair of sliding bearings and repair of open gear tooth surfaces (using repair lubricants to repair the surface).
