What does grease color mean and how does it affect lubrication
Greases are solid or semisolid lubricants that are usually composed of oil thickened with saponification (or other thickening agents). These high viscosity lubricants are designed to protect, seal, and lubricate various equipment parts and mechanisms that require infrequent lubrication. Greases are used in situations where lubricating oil will not stay in place.
Greases are made from base oils and can be thickened with soaps, fatty acids, or other emulsifiers.
As with any other type of lubricant, the purpose of using grease is to reduce friction. This occurs when the grease forms a thin film between two moving surfaces. Selecting the right grease is important to reduce friction and wear, prevent corrosion, protect sealed bearings from contamination, and prevent leaks. You can learn more about choosing the right grease for your application here.
One thing to keep in mind when selecting a grease is color.
It is important to note that while users still judge greases by their appearance (as well as feel and smell), appearance has no real impact on the service or quality of a grease. On the other hand, mechanical stability, load-carrying capacity, oxygen stability, water resistance, and temperature life are important.
    Does Grease Color Affect Lubrication?
Today, you can find grease in almost every color, including black, white, gray, blue, red, purple, green, yellow, and more. The meaning of colors and the perception and opinion of them vary from manufacturer to manufacturer and across the industry.
Often, manufacturers use color to identify the type of grease. For example, bright colors may also be more attractive than a typical brown lubricant.
While there are no hard and fast rules, and grease color coding systems vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, there are some common details. For example, white grease indicates a food-grade grease that can be used for machinery lubrication in food processing, bottling, and packaging plants. If there is a possibility of incidental contact with food, an H1 lubricant must be used. For example, Mobil Food Machinery Grease and Metalub FMG NO2 Food Machinery Grease are registered as H1 lubricants by NSF International.
Gray or black greases often contain molybdenum disulfide (MoS2)/graphite and are intended for use in harsh operating conditions. You might think that bright colors would indicate their use, such as red for high temperatures or blue for low temperatures, but unfortunately, this is not the case. For example, there are various brands of red, blue, and green high-temperature greases.
While color (in some cases) may help identify the type of grease, do not use color alone. There are many important factors that go into determining which grease you should purchase.
How does grease color affect performance?
Grease can change color over its life, which can indicate a problem. It can lose color or become darker or blacker. These color changes can occur due to thermal degradation, oxidation, or contamination. High temperatures can cause dyes to lose color intensity, and highly oxidized greases can turn black with use. Grease that appears milky can indicate water contamination. Additionally, if different greases are mixed in service, the resulting color can be a mix of the two.
If your grease experiences a color change during service, it could be a sign that it has reached or is nearly at its condemnation limit.
